The occipital nerve block procedure is a small injection of numbing medication and anti-inflammation methylprednisolone (synthetic cortisone) into the scalp at the back of your head. It numbs and treats painful inflammation of the occipital nerve which may be the cause of pain in the back of the neck and headaches. The occipital nerve block procedure is also used in diagnosing of the occipital neuralgia or tension type of headaches. If you respond to the occipital nerve block procedure with good pain relief, it may be repeated periodically without side effects.
Although very rare, as with any injection, complications may include a bruising, local infection and reaction to medication injected.
