Epidural Steroid Injections
An Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI) is a common, minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from chronic pain in the lower back, neck, and legs. This procedure delivers powerful anti-inflammatory medication (corticosteroids) directly into the epidural space—the area around the spinal nerves—to reduce swelling and provide significant pain relief.
Common Conditions Treated
- Herniated Discs: Pressure on spinal nerves from "bulging" discs.
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal.
- Sciatica: Pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve down the leg.
- Degenerative Disc Disease: Breakdown of the discs between vertebrae.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. Using Fluoroscopy (live X-ray guidance), our specialists ensure the needle is placed with pinpoint accuracy. Most patients experience a local numbing sensation, and while you may feel slight pressure, the process is generally well-tolerated.
Recovery and Results
Most patients can return to their normal daily activities the following day. While some feel relief immediately, it is common for the full effects of the steroid medication to take 3 to 5 days to become apparent. Relief can last anywhere from several weeks to many months, depending on the individual case.
